Eerste Hoofdstukken – 25. BEA Special

Eerste Hoofdstukken is een serie op De Boekblogger waarin ik het eerste hoofdstuk van een boek lees (meestal als voorpublicatie van een nieuw te verschijnen boek of een pasverschenen boek) en mijn mening geef: doorlezen of wegleggen?

Dit is de week van BEA, Book Expo America. Daar worden nieuwe boeken gepresenteerd, schrijvers geinterviewd en panel discussies gehouden. Nee, da’s in New York, daar ben ik niet bij. Wel doe ik mee met Armchair BEA waarbij boek bloggers de hele week met elkaar in discussie gaan over goede boeken, het wel en wee van de boek blogger, en andere relevante zaken, en er worden ook weggevertjes georganiseerd.

Mijn weggevertje staat HIER. Je kunt een Engels boek winnen en je hoeft er verder niets voor te doen.

Maar je vraagt je af, daar heeft deze serie Eerste Hoofdstukken toch niets mee te maken? Toch wel. Ter ere van BEA is er een ebook uitgegeven met een stuk of 30 eerste hoofdstukken van boeken die binnenkort in Amerika gaan verschijnen.

En dan denk ik: wat in Amerika verschijnt ligt binnenkort ook wel in Nederland in de boekwinkels. Er zijn genoeg mensen hier die graag Engels lezen (Me!!). En dan worden er een aantal van die boeken ook nog vertaald (bij sommige boeken staan de Nederlandse uitgevers er al bij). Dus leek het me ook interessant voor mijn Nederlandse lezers om te zien wat er voor nieuwe boeken aankomen.

Hier een voorproefje – zeer geselecteerd door mijn voorkeur – van wat er binnenkort te lezen valt. En als de NLse boekwinkels of online boekwinkels het niet hebben, kun je altijd nog, zeer voordelig en zonder porto, bij bookdepository bestellen.

Een post-apocalyptisch verhaal (de wereld is half vergaan, er zijn niet veel mensen meer over).

Boek: The Dog Stars van Peter Heller

Komt uit: Augustus 2012 (USA)

The Light Between Oceans

Dit boek is al een grote hit in Australie, en ik heb er naar zitten uitkijken. Ik heb een digitaal recensie-exemplaar kunnen bemachtigen en daar ben ik heel blij mee.

Het boek gaat over een echtpaar (rond 1900 geloof ik) dat op een eenzaam vuurtoreneiland gaat werken. Ze kunnen geen kinderen krijgen terwijl ze dat graag willen. Op een dag strand er een bootje met een dode man en een kleine (levende) baby bij hun eiland. Ze willen de baby houden, maar…

Boek: The Light Between Oceans van M. L. Stedman

Komt uit: Eind Juli 2012 (USA); wordt in Nederland door De Boekerij uitgebracht (gepubliceerd als Het licht van de zee)

Een oudere man die zich afzijdig houdt van het dorp waar hij woont, heeft een boomgaard waar hij van leeft. Op een gegeven moment komen er twee zwangere meisjes langs, die appels stelen. De meisjes mogen op zijn boerderij komen wonen, maar zijn daar niet veilig…

Boek: The Orchardist van Amanda Coplin

Flight Behavior

Barbara Kingsolver is één van mijn favorite schrijvers (van The Lacuna kun je HIER mijn Engelse recensie lezen, maar ik heb veel meer van haar gelezen).

Dit boek gaat over een jonge vrouw die al tien jaar huisvrouw speelt en nauwelijks het huis uit komt. Maar dan heeft iemand een oogje op haar. Ze spreken af en onderweg naar hem toe, lopend de heuvel op, ziet ze het bos in brand staan. Maar het is een vreemd vuur, alsof het niet echt is. Als dit bekend wordt, gaan maatschappelijke groeperingen van allerlei pluimage zich ermee bemoeien.

Boek: Flight Behavior van Barbara Kingsolver

Komt uit: Begin November 2012 (USA)

Uitgeverij: HarperCollins

En verder nog

John Saturnall’s Feast van Lawrence Norfolk. Ken je deze schrijver (nog)? Hij schreef eerder Lemprière’s Dictionary en The Pope’s Rhinoceros. Komt in het Nederlands bij De Bezige Bij uit.

Origin van Jessica Khoury. Young Adult boek over een meisje dat door geleerden in een laboratorium in de Amazone is grootgebracht. Het boek is ook verkocht naar Nederland, maar er staat niet bij welke uitgever.

Truth in Advertising van John Kennedy. Debut over een eenzame man die in marketing werkt, ontdekt dat zijn vader erg ziek is, waardoor hij bij zichzelf gaat nadenken of zijn eigen leven wel loopt zoals hij dat wil.

En? Zit er iets bij dat je leuk lijkt?
